What Governments & Organizations can learn from Futurists by Omar M. Almahmoud

As the world progresses, it’s more important than ever for governments & organizations to be future-focused in their thinking. This is especially true when it comes to strategic planning. After all, the whole point of strategic planning is to map out a course for the future. So, how can governments & organizations make sure they’re doing strategic planning the right way? Well they can start by taking lessons from futurists.

Futurists are professionals who study trends and make predictions about the future. While they don’t have a crystal ball, they do have a deep understanding of how social, technological, and economic changes will shape the world in the years to come. As a result, futurists are uniquely positioned to help develop long-term plans that take into account upcoming changes.

There are eight key lessons that governments & organizations can learn from futurists when it comes to strategic planning:

If you want to stay ahead of the curve, you need to start thinking like a futurist. That means having a clear understanding of the trends and technologies that are shaping the future and using that knowledge to make informed decisions about the present. Fortunately, there’s no need to be a psychic to do this; there are proven methods for strategic planning that can help you think like a futurist. Here’s how.

1. Understand the Present landscape

The first step in any good strategic planning process is to take stock of the current landscape. This includes understanding the trends that are currently shaping the world around us and how those trends will impact your business in the short, medium, and long term. To do this, you need to monitor not only what’s happening in your sector but also in adjacent industries. This will give you a comprehensive view of the playing field and help you identify opportunities and threats early on.

2. Anticipate Future Trends

Once you have a good understanding of the present, you can start looking to the future. This is where things can get tricky, as it’s impossible to predict the future with 100% accuracy. However, there are certain methods that can help you get pretty close. One option is trend watching, which involves monitoring social, economic, technological, and political shifts to identify patterns and forecast future trends. You can also use scenario planning, which involves coming up with multiple potential future scenarios and preparing for each one accordingly.

3. Make Informed Decisions

Once you have a clear understanding of the present landscape and have anticipated future trends, you can start making informed decisions about the present. This is where your strategic planning skills really come into play. To make sure your decisions are based on sound data and reasoning, be sure to consult with experts from different disciplines and use a variety of ‘what if’ scenarios when testing your hypotheses. By taking a scientific approach to decision-making, you can ensure that your company is always ahead of the curve.

4. Think long-term

Futurists are always thinking about the long-term implications of current trends. When it comes to strategic planning, this means taking a 10-20 year view instead of just looking at the next fiscal year.

5. Be proactive

Many organizations wait until a problem arises before they start looking for solutions. But by then, it’s often too late. Futurists are always thinking ahead so they can identify potential problems and address them before they become serious threats.

6. Embrace change

Change is inevitable—and it’s not always bad. In fact, many times change presents opportunities for organizations to grow and improve. Futurists understand this and embrace change instead of resisting it.

7. Stay flexible

Plans never go exactly as intended—that’s just a fact of life. But instead of getting discouraged by this reality, futurists stay flexible and adapt their plans as necessary. This allows them to remain focused on their ultimate goals while still being able to respond effectively to unexpected events.

8. Be patient

Making predictions about the future is not an exact science—it takes time, research, and analysis. And even then, there’s no guarantee that predictions will come true. But futurists understand this and are patient in their work so they can develop accurate forecasts that organizations can use to make sound decisions..

Strategic planning is critical for any government or organization that wants to be successful in the long-term—and there’s no group of people better equipped to help with this task than futurists. By learning from futurists and incorporating their thinking into their own strategic planning processes, organizations can set themselves up for success now and in the years to come.
