On one cold English morning I was discussing with Jeremy Hutchison-Krupat an Associate Professor in Innovation & Operations Management at Cambridge Judge Business School , whether one should pursue higher education or be a lifelong learner and the differences between the two paths. He brought much needed insight to the University case, where I try to summarize the main points below in this essay.
The Question
Higher education has traditionally been seen as the only route to professional success, but with the emergence of self-education, this is no longer the case. Self-education provides a unique opportunity to learn skills independently and can be more affordable than university. This raises the question, what is the future of higher education? Is self-education poised to replace universities?

Ultimately though, if you’re looking for flexibility, affordability and control over your learning experience then self education might be the better choice for you and using an Adaptive Learning System such as Anki would give a much needed boost, whereas if structure is key then university could be just what you need! Whichever option works best for you though both are correct and the best of both worlds would be ideal.
