The Wisdom of Nietzsche for Business & Life by Omar M. Almahmoud

With the end of the year and the start of a new one, I took some time off to slow down, reflect and contemplate. One of the most inspiring works I have been reading are the publications of the German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. I try to draw some lessons from his writings for business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the most influential German philosophers of all time. He was a pioneer in existentialism, and his works have influenced generations of thinkers, leaders, and scientists. He wrote extensively about morality, human nature, and the meaning of life. His writings have been studied by scholars and theologians from around the world, but what many people don’t realize is that his works are also filled with valuable insights that can help entrepreneurs succeed in their business ventures. Let’s take a look at some key lessons entrepreneurs and business leaders can learn from Nietzsche’s writings.

The Power of Self-Awareness

One of the most important lessons Nietzsche taught was the power of self-awareness. He argued that the more aware you are of your own strengths and weaknesses, the better equipped you are to make decisions that will lead to success. This is especially true for entrepreneurs, who often find themselves facing complex challenges with no easy solutions. By learning to recognize their own biases, blind spots, and areas where they need improvement, entrepreneurs can become better decision makers and increase their chances of success.

The Benefit of Asking Questions

Finally, Nietzsche taught about the importance of questioning existing beliefs and norms in order to find true understanding. He believed that thought-provoking questions could lead people down paths they had never considered before which would eventually lead them to knowledge and wisdom they could not have otherwise achieved on their own. For entrepreneurs this means taking time out to ask questions about their business model or industry in order to gain deeper insight into what they’re doing and how they can do it better.

Accept That Change is Constant

One of Nietzscheā€™s most famous quotes is ā€œThat which does not kill us makes us stronger.ā€ This quote speaks to the idea that change is inevitable and that embracing it is part of the human condition. As an entrepreneur, you may be faced with changes in your industry or customer base that can seem daunting at first, but these changes also present opportunities to grow and reinvent yourself if you are willing to accept them. By embracing change rather than resisting it, you will become more resilient and better equipped to handle whatever comes your way.

Focus on What You Can Control

Nietzsche believed in focusing on the things one can control in life, rather than expending energy worrying about what one cannot control. As an entrepreneur, this means looking inward at what you can do to make changes within your organization or product offering. Focusing on areas where you have influence or control gives you a greater sense of ownership over results and increases your chances of success. It also allows you to stay focused on what really matters instead of getting bogged down with external factors outside your control.

Be Bold and Take Risks

Nietzsche was a strong believer in taking risks and being bold when pursuing goals or ideas. This same spirit should be applied by entrepreneurs who want to succeed in business today. Taking risks means pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and trying new strategies or approaches even if thereā€™s no guarantee they will work out as planned. While there may be short-term failures along the way, taking risks also opens up opportunities for long-term success, something Nietzsche himself understood well.

Friedrich Nietzsche was a brilliant philosopher whose works continue to inspire thinkers today including entrepreneurs and business leaders, both in the private and public sectors alike. His teachings on self-awareness, perseverance, asking questions, that change is inevitable and our focus should always remain on the things we can control, and that we should be taking bold risks that often lead to greater rewards in the long run, are just as relevant today as when he first wrote them down over 150 years ago. By following his advice we can set ourselves up for greater success in our endeavors.

  • Nietzsche taught about the power of self-awareness, arguing that the more aware you are of your own strengths and weaknesses, the better equipped you are to make decisions that will lead to success.
  • He also believed in focusing on what one can control in life rather than expending energy worrying about what one cannot control.
  • Finally, he was a strong believer in taking risks and being bold when pursuing goals or ideas.

I close with one of his most well-known quotes, a timeless truth which has a profound effect on me personally

ā€œBattle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.ā€
